Yesterday the Interns and I started our class on Disciple Making. We learned about Discovery Bible Study, which is writing a Scripture down word for word, then writing it in our own words and then writing down what we intend to do in response to the scripture and share it with people. Here is an example:
Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (ESV)
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all you soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorpost of your house and on your gates.”
My Own Words
Listen, the Lord our God is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and might. Keep these words in your heart. Teach these words to your family in everything you do: in your home, when you go out, before bed and when you wake up. Keep these words close to you and never let them leave your mind. Write them on the door and gate of your home.
I will in response
- Write scriptures and hang them where I will see them in my bedroom. I want get better with my scripture memorization and in the past it has helped to have scriptures written and hung around me, so that is what I am doing again. In my room I have a collage of pictures of friends, family and other things that are important to me above my bed, and that is where I am hanging the scriptures I want to memorize.
- I also want to pray more. I know I don’t do well when I try to set a particular time to pray or read the Bible, my schedule is constantly changing and is very flexible. I want to be spending time with God throughout my day rather than penciling him into set time in the day and checking it off like everything else in my life.
